Review of a Home Depot Kids Workshop

We recently participated in the Home Depot Kids Workshop at the Home Depot Store in Fairfax Circle. What a great way to spend an hour! Participation in the workshop is completely free and while the ages posted are from 5-12 years old, they didn’t bat towards my 3 year old. Upon arrival, the kids were given Home Depot aprons (similar to the ones the employees wear) and their names were written on them. Children are then given the choice of three projects: A double hinged picture frame, a table top football goal or a football themed peg board for hanging things that mounts to the wall.

After picking out the projects they wanted to complete we picked a table and were given safety goggles because the children work with real tools. The employees could not have been more helpful. Since I was there alone with the my 7, 5, and 3 year old, one employee, Mr. Ken, took it upon himself to be my extra hands. He walked the kids through the project, gave them tips on the proper use of the tools and the “secret” of removing bent nails. The kids found this secret fascinating, and I suspect ended up with some bent nails on purpose just to have the pleasure of removing them!

During the workshop we were offered complimentary bottles of water and lots of words of encouragement and kudos for the “hard work” we were doing. When our projects were completed, the kids were each given a certificate of completion detailing their project, and a pin specific to their project that was put on their apron.

There were kids that had obviously been participating in the workshops for awhile as they had amassed quite a collection of pins for themselves! According to the website www.homedepot.com, the workshops are offered in all Home Depot stores on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to noon. Projects are generally posted on their website, with October 4th being a whistle fire truck. You will definitely find us there!
