It first opened its doors in 1855 and has born witness to countless moments in history for the Smithsonian, the United States, and the world. Join one of our volunteer Castle Docents as they take you on a trip through time to meet some of the people who shaped the early Smithsonian and how the Castle functioned as both headquarters and a testing grounds for what became the Smithsonian we know today. Come learn about the founding and early history of the Smithsonian; its original benefactor, James Smithson; and the incredible history and architecture of the Castle. Here is your opportunity to discover some of the treasured stories that are part of the Castle’s rich history.
