Rise + Rhyme is not your typical kids’ activity and it may be the kids’ activity you’ve been looking for. Hosted at Busboys and Poets Hyattsville location, Rise & Rhythm is a music and story time that offers as much for children as it does for adults.
Rise + Rhyme is held in a large room separate from the main seating area of the restaurant. This gives kids the run of the place without fear of disrupting diners who have arrived without children in tow. Tables are cleared in front of the performance space to allow children ample room to dance or lounge on the floor in front of the performer. But, plenty of tables remain set-up for grown-ups to enjoy coffee and breakfast within viewing distance of their children enjoying the entertainment. As a bonus, complimentary herbal tea and apple juice are provided. At a recent performance I attended, I was able to enjoy a delicious breakfast burrito with a friend (uninterrupted!) while we watched our two-year olds rock out to Liz aka “The Singing Lizard.” Once we were done, we joined our children in front of the singer to help play some musical instruments Liz had brought along and listen to some stories read by a Busboys and Poets server.
Rise + Rhyme is held on Mondays from 9:30 to 11am and is designed for children five and under. The program starts off with a performance by a singer, including favorites The Singing Lizard and Mr. Gabe, followed by the reading of books by a Busboys & Poets employee. Caregivers are welcome to join their children on the floor or sit at a table.
Busboys and Poets has done a great job of creating an atmosphere that is welcoming to both children and adults. The program has attracted many regulars. Busboys and Poets also has a delicious food, much of which is kid-friendly. I plan on returning very soon to watch my little one have a ball while I sit and enjoy relatively relaxed meal before joining in on the fun. I only hope that Busboys & Poets will bring Rise & Rhyme to some of its other locations soon!
