Best Snow Tubing Near DC

If you’re finding yourself (or your kids!) with a sled but no snow, it may just be time to head to one of the ski resorts near DC for a family-fun snow tubing experience!

If you’re going with little ones, many of the snow tubing venues have special kiddie hills designated for the smaller crowd. You’ll even find some smaller tubes for them.

Below you’ll find age and height restrictions so you can book the best option for your family or group.

You’ll want to consider:

  • When you want to go (weekday, weekend, holiday)
  • How long you want to go for
  • How far you are willing to drive

What to Bring Snow Tubing

Before you leave home, make sure you pack the following for each member of your group:

  • Waterproof gloves
  • Hiking boots or shoes (preferably waterproof)
  • Hat
  • Scarf
  • Extra layers
  • An extra pair (or two!) of socks
  • Snow or winter jacket
  • Sunglasses (on a sunny day, the white snow is be very bright!)
  • Water
  • Food and snacks (unless you want to eat at the resort or nearby)

#1 Bryce Resort

Tickets for snow tubing at Bryce Resort are for 90-minute sessions.

If you’re taking kids, keep in mind children must be 36″ tall and at least 4 years old in order to go snow tubing.

Like other resorts, they also have a conveyor belt that will take you to the top of each hill but some walking will still be required.

Hours are different throughout the week:

  • Monday-Friday 11am – 12 pm
  • Saturday, Sunday 9am – 1:30pm
  • Holiday hours tend to be more crowded.

#2 Massanutten Resort

Distance from DC: 2.5 hours

Price: $30 – $40

Snow tubing is a blast at Massanutten Resorts! Their 16 tubing lanes are 900-feet long and have a drop of 120-feet.

These lanes are for ages 5 and up. Younger snow tubers can still join in the fun in the kiddie tubing area.

Prices vary between weekday and weekend and all sessions (regardless of when you come) are 90-minutes. Prices include use of the snow tube, tube runs and the tube lift.

Make sure to purchase tickets in advance.

Reservations open to the general public 10 days in advance unless you are staying at a Massanutten-owned property, then you can book 21 days in advance.

#3 Wintergreen Resort

Wintergreen Resort is home to Virginia’s largest tubing park. It’s equivalent to standing on top of a 10-story building with a hill that’s longer than three football fields.

These are fast and fun runs where you can go up to 30mph! But don’t worry, you won’t have to climb back up to the top. you can just take the conveyor lift and go again.

Snow tubing at Wintergreen is best for children ages 6 and up and 42″ and taller. You can gone one person at a time or put the tubes together to go as a group.

#4 The Omni Homestead Resort

Visit the Penguin Slides Tubing Park at The Omni for a fun hour of tubing.

They also have other fun winter activities while you’re there including mini snowmobiles for kids 6-12, ice skating and more. The Penguin Express will bring you back up to the top.

Sessions are for 1-hour and kids must be 5-years-old and 48″ or taller to tube. Make sure to make your reservations in advance.

#5 Wisp Resort

Snow tubing at Wisp Resort near Deep Creek Lake is amazing. Not only is there snow tubing but there are a lot of other fun Deep Creek winter activities.

Wisp has 10 snow tubing lanes and no experience is required for tubing which makes it fun for the whole family! You can choose to go down solo or connect the tubes together for even more fun.

As with other resorts, tickets are sold in 2-hour time slots unless you visit on Wednesdays or Thursdays, then you can reserve a 4-hour session. Sessions begin at the top of the hour.

#6 Gaylord National

Gaylord National’s Snow Flow Mountain is a fun place to experience tubing close to home. Here you slide through conveyor belts that are frozen and ride tubes down a plummet slide or hilly ice coaster at the Snow Factory.

Your ticket purchase includes unlimited rides down the hill on your selected date.

Restrictions: riders must be 42″ tall to ride by themselves on a single small tube and 60″ to ride solo on a large tube. Children cannot ride with adults.

#7 Liberty Mountain Resort

At Liberty Mountain Resort, you can ride the escalator with your tubes to the top of the hill to make it a lot easier. Staff is also available at the top and bottom of the hill which is a great help especially when snow tubing with kids.

Liberty Resort also has a kiddie snow tubing area called Bubly Tube Park which is perfect for the smaller kids.

Sip on some hot chocolate, enjoy a meal or a snack and even the arcade when you’re done snow tubing.

#8 Whitetail Resort

#9 Montage Mountain

Snow tubing at Montage Mountain Resort is a popular destination partly due to it being located 10-minutes off of I-81. It’s also very close to a large shopping and dining area, along with major hotel chains nearby.

Another bonus is snow tubing tickets are sold in 4-hour time slots (unlike the 2-hour slots normally sold at other snow tubing locations).

The snow tubing park is found at the lower part of the ski slopes so if some members of your party want to ski while others want to snow tube, you’ll be able to part and enter from the same place which is a plus.

Airboarding is a new sport that is available at Montage you may want to check out while you’re there as well.

There ‘Magic Carpet Surface Lift’ will easily take you to the top.

#10 Seven Springs Mountain Resort
