The Young Spectaculars and the Front Yard Adventure

Founded in 2010, Arts on the Horizon is a non-profit theatre that provides performances and education offerings to the age group that does pretend play the best. Geared towards ages 0 to 6 years, Arts on the Horizon sparks imaginative play and engages the creative side of children. Their newest production, The Young Spectaculars and the Front Yard Adventure is a spectacular 30-minute adventure that you will surely not want to miss!

Head on over to Downtown Baptist Church located on S. Washington Street in Alexandria, VA and see what brother and sister Andrew (played by Stanley Andrew Jackson, III) and Emma (played by Melissa A. Caffrey) are up to in their front yard. As you are waiting for the show to begin, you and your child can hang out and play with a variety of toys and books. The kids won’t even know that they are waiting.

The seating is first come, first served and on the particular day that we were there, there seemed to be just the right amount of space for adults and children to sit. The back of the theatre area is lined with chairs for adults but you are welcome to sit on the floor with your child. Intimate and non-intimidating, this venue is perfect for the younger set.

Downtime is minimal which is key when trying to occupy a little ones energy before the real adventure begins. As soon as you walk in to seat yourself, Emma will be engaging the children in a non-verbal opening act, using a cassette player and a variety of props.

Directed by Michael John Casey, this performance is packed with quick moving superhero missions! Stuck in their front yard, Andrew and Emma must use their highly charged imaginations to help save their neighborhood. Andrew and Emma will amaze you with their imaginative costumes and sparkling expressions. Children and adults alike will be engaged as they go on five different undertakings to save the day.

The Young Spectaculars and the Front Yard Adventure will leave you and your family planning out your next heroic pursuit all without spending a dime. While Andrew and Emma may be saving cats in trees, you, too can put on your dish towel cape and go make someone’s day in your community. An excellent indoor option during these colder months, The Young Spectaculars teaches their curious audience members how to take turns and conquer fears.
