Union Market

Union Market traces its roots back to the 1800s. It has had its ups and downs over the last 140 years and its latest incarnation is definitely an up. A large open space filled with a huge array of restaurants and grocery items it is worth spending some time walking around before making any purchasing decisions. After checking out the offerings on a recent visit my toddler and I enjoyed freshly made bagels from Buffalo & Bergen followed by a homemade lemon cupcake from Curbside Cupcakes.

I washed it all down with a micro-brewed coffee to order from Peregrine Espresso. I am looking forward to going back to check out some of the specialty items, including the vendor dedicated to a variety of olive oils, and the spice seller offering spices sourced both locally and abroad.

Union Market has a bustling lunchtime crowd. Dining options range from oysters to Mediterranean fare to empanadas. Many locals regularly frequent Union Market’s butchers, produce stand, creamery selling organic small-batch products, and specialty bread and cheese shops. If you go, be sure to check out these out to see if there is anything you would like to take home. Many vendors sell food that is largely locally-sourced.

There are also many gift options available at Union Market. These range from a bottle of fine wine, to organic cotton onesies and bibs, to fresh flowers, to organic fair-trade certified soaps and beauty products In addition to the regular vendors in Union Market, there are some “pop-up” vendors.

Union Market is kid-friendly (as long as you stay away from the knife stall). There are highchairs and a changing table available. The wide, open space inside the Market makes it stroller-friendly.

Every Wednesday morning at 10:30am children can enjoy a performance by a local singer for $5.00 hosted by Boogie Babes. Other events are listed online. Plenty of tables are available for sitting down to enjoy a snack or meal.

Union Market is open from Wednesday to Friday from 11am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 8pm. Currently the market is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. There is ample free parking in a secure lot. We highly recommend parking in this lot.
